Tenth Artefact Blogg.

My last lesson on this project was so stressful. I had so much to do in a very short amount of time and i wasnt sure i would make the dead line. I was diturmined to actually finish a project and pass it so i worked hard for all the lessons making sure i wasnt distracted by anyone. I decided that the printing of my pictures was the most inmportant thing to do because i had atleast started everything else. I was still scared of going in the dark room by myslef but i needed to get everything done so i did it as quickly as i could but made sure it was done properly. i still had to do tests so i did test of the pictures up untill break and left them over break to fix and wash so i could look at them after and see if i needed to change any of the exposure times or if i hadnt developed it for long enough. After break i looked over my tests and some of them where better than others but i didnt have time to do tests again i still needed to do my final prints so i just hoped for the best and went for it. Luckly they all came out okkay so then it was on to finishing my rose. I had trouble with this last week because it was alot harder than i expected and then i still needed to paint my poem onto the grave stone. I finished my rose in about 10 minutes and then i started to write the peom onto my gravestone but i noticed i had hardly any time left so i started to mount the pictures onto the big metal petals and then that was the end of the lesson and i couldnt do any more. Yet again i am dissapointed that i didnt do aswell as i would of liked to and didnt finish my project in the time given. I no if i hadnt of gone to belgium the week before i would of got the project finished and thats not a mistake i will make again.

ninth Artefact lesson (:

Today i was really panicing through the week beacause i couldnt find anyone to model for me but luckly Melissa stepped in and saved the day (: We got her all dressed up and made up ready for taking the pictures i was worried that the pictures wouldnt come out so i took two pictures of the same shot just incase. They where going really well then i remembered that i was forgeting that i needed someone to stand in the background and look scary. I went on a hunt looking for people but nearly everyone was really busy with their own work but James was free for a little while and helped us with the last shots. He stood in the background looking scary then he helped me smash the glass bottle and set it up around melissa when she was laying on the floor and then we added red food colouring to make it look like there was blood. It looked really convincing and quite scary. The last shot i took about 10 of because it is the shot that i needed to scratch the writing into and i needed spares just incase i went wrong on one of them. I stayed in over break to develop my film and have it drying while i tryed to work out how i was going to make my rose. I was aloud to use a sheet of metal like i wanted to make the rose and then i had to start to make templates of the petals and cut them out this was hard work and I kept scratching myself on the metal. After i had cut out all the petals i had to try and work out how i was going to put them all together. I could see how i wanted it in my head but it was alot harder to do it. I tryed about 4 differnt methods and in the end i was doing well with threding it onto thin wire and layering it. It looked like a flower but not exactly a rose but it was still progress.
Next lesson i have alot to do. I need to finish my rose print and mount my pictures and paint the peom onto my grave stone and i only have till 12 so im going to have to work really hard if im going to get it all done in time.

eighth artefact lesson.

This lesson I had to pick what one of my 3 ideas i was going to do. I picked the one about the girl going out at night and her thinking she was safe but really she wasnt.
After break i started to develope the negitives that i had scratched into to see how the writing came out. At first i didnt notice i had the negitive the wrong way round so all the writing was comming out backwards but i just thought that it wasnt neat enough to read but then Emily said why is it backwards and thats when i noticed. I then tryed it the right way round and it was readable. On my final idea i will try to to the writing alot neater and easyer to read but its hard becasue it is so small. I did a couple of test strips to show my progress and then did a final copy showing the writing the right way round and with the exposure okkay. After lunch i started to devople the way i was going to mount my idea and i knew that i wanted a grave stone in it beacuse that represents her being dead and then i thought how the put flowers on graves and how a rose looked pretty but then its thorns can hurt you like her thinking she was safe but really she wasnt then Sir showed me a poem about a rose and how it looked nice on the outside but there was a worm in the middle and it was eating it and killing it but it still looked pretty on the outside. I thought this fitted in with my idea aswell and i would paint the poem onto my grave stone like they have writing on the grave stone and that is the story behind how i got my final idea. In the last lesson i started to make my grave stone this was alot harder than i thought becasue the chicken wire was hard to cut and we couldnt work out the shape properly but in the end we decided that not all gravestones look perfect because they are old and crumbling so I quickly modrocked it before the end of the day.
Next week i will take my pictures on film and get the film developed and then start to make my rose.

seventh artefact unit

this lesson i was only there for half the lesson because i had a exam.
First I helped jessica with her test shots and then i went to think about how i would shoot my test shots. I found after helping jessica with hers that they arnt as simple as they look and it could take quite alot of shots to get the right shot that you wanted. I decided to make little sketches of what i wanted my test shots to look like when i went out to take them. This was quite hard because i could see what i wanted them to look like in my head but i wasnt quite sure how to draw them. The reason why i did sketches of my ideas was so i could look at my book and at the pictures i had drawn and have a idea straight away of how i wanted it to be set up instead of thinking on my feet at last minuite.

sixth artefact lesson

Today we have been busy on independant working.
Before break I started by sticking in all the pictures that hadn't printed out last week so now im quite behind on some work like i need to write up about what we did for the pictures and how we got the ideas and what I feel went well with them but i will catch up on it when i get home. I also did my secondary picture research but it didn't print out so im going to have to do that next week aswell so i will still be behind on work.
After break I started looking for a photogroper to research who was along the lines of dream becasue all of my final ideas have dream in them. I started by trying the internet but i didn't really know what to type in so i asked and sir suggested Francesca Woodman but i had already done her so i couldn't do her again he also suggested Cindy Sherman but i had a look at her work and didn't like it. Its a bit creepy its a lady that dresses up as famous people and takes pictures of it and i dont like that so then he gave me THE PHOTO BOOK to look through and see if i could find anyone i like i was starting to loose hope because i had gone though nearly the whole book and hadn't found anyone but finaly i found Sarah Moon and her photo called Morgan and i loved it and then started to do some research about her and print out some photos and that took me all the rest of the day. I am proud of what i have done today i dont think i am too behind now but i still have a little bit of catching up to do.
Next week i will do some test shots for my ideas.

fith artefact lesson

This week we where doing photograpy with water. I worked with emily for this. Our plan was to get a shot of a glass bottle full of water smashing just as it hit the ground and started to crack. First we where experimenting with the way colours spread in water and what patterens it made and took quite alot of pictures of that. Then we dropped the bottle but because we hadn't done any test with objects before we dropped the bottle we didnt get the shot we wanted so we cleaned up the glass and did some tests with dropping some water and taking a picture and also with a stone to see if we could get the timing right. This wasn't very sucsessfull but we got a new glass and filled it with water and did some of the patterens with the food colouring in the water again and dropped the jar but again we didnt get the shot we wanted so we changed to impervising some ideas. I had the idea of tipping down a part in the wall that looked like some steps. We tryed this idea with normal water and coloured water aswell. They both worked really well and looked effective. Then we tryed it with other objects and because I was using the camera I was mainly saying what ideas to do when we couldnt think of anything to do. We went from throwing water at bins to walls to taking pictures of reflections and the way water ran down different objects and the way the water droplets hung. This was inrteresting to do because we found out what ideas worked and what ones we needed to do some tests with before we could do our final ideas.

fourth artefact lesson

This week we spent alot of the day working on our sketch books because we are behind and need to catch up so were not rushing about at last minute trying to catch up on work from weeks ago. This is good because then we all know that we are on track with work and also checking them regularly will help us if we have done any work wrong or missed something out or need to start something again.
After we where learning about a artist called Phillippe Halsman and one of his peices calle Dali Atomicus. It is a picture where he has some things hanging so it looks like they are floating and he is jumping. There are also cats being thrown across the page and water. We learnt how this picture was done in different layers so when the watter is going accross the man and nothing else gets wet and the chair is hung on the ceeling by a wire. Its a very impressive peice of work but the best part was when we got into groups and tryed to re creat the piece of work. unfortunatly we wernt aloud to through cats. I wanted to be the one who was jumping but so did James and i knew i couldnt beet James so i was the person holding the chair instead of the chair hanging Kara was throughing the water and Emily was taking the photo. Well it started off with emily doing the water and kara taking the photo but they swapped around. We worked well as a group and got quite a fue good pictures so it was hard to pick only one to stick into our books we couldnt all agree on just one picture so we stuck two in. After i had worked in my group i went and helped another group because they needed someone to through the water. It took ages and the builders kept watching and laughing witch was abit off putting but we still carried on working. James wasn't getting the picture taken at the right time so when Miss came out she helped and we got it right after about 3 shots .
Next week we will be getting our breif about our project and what our peice of art has to be about and what it will have to include to be able to be shown in the place.

Third Artefact Lesson (:

Today we started off working on our sketch books and bloggs untill about 11 then we where getting ready to go out and do some more pictures so we could get from only about 8 pictures comming out to all 24 of the pictures comming out. We had to try and find pattern and textures to take pictures of like brick for pattern and leaves and objects with different textures. I found this much easyer than the word isolation because there are a lot more options. I took quite alot of the pictures because we did alot of them laying on the floor and Emily didnt want to do that so i did them instead. I dont want to seem big headed but most of the pictures emily took they where blury or not focused anyway but we still got our full 24 on the film and they all came out no blanks so i was happy about that. After we started to do test strips and final coppys. I was dissapointed with how my test strips turned out because i was usally good at them but this week i kept acidently moving the strip so the picture was blured so i had to do them again i ended up with pages of test strips and not very many final ones but the final ones i did do im happy with them and the exposure was just right and the focus.

Artefact lesson two (:

Today we started off in a different room and it took us a while to find it but it we found it in the end. We where going over what we where supposed to have done for this lesson but hardly any of us had done it so we spent up untill break working on our sketch books for a bit.
After break we where back in the normal room and we cut our negatives in to strips of 6 and put them in a plastic thing. We then where shown how to use the inlarger and how to do contact prints then how to do test prints so we spent up untill lunch doing test strips to stick into our sketch books to show our progress over the day.
After lunch we started on our final prints using what we found out using our test strips on how long to time it for. Most of my final prints came out okkay but some where a bit too dark and some where a bit too light but then i knew what to do to fix it and that was just to have the light on for a little bit longer or a little bit less.

5/12/2010

artefact lesson one (:

Today we started a new unit and its all independant work. Before break we where shown how to use the cameras and how to develop the films. After break we went out in pairs to take pictures of the word that we where given ours was isolation and we struggled with this because there arn't many things around cambridge that are isolated because it was busy but we unded up getting some good pictures. The ones that came out best on the negatives where the one of the duck that i chased around the field trying to get the picture. The picture of me holding the peice of paper saying isolation because we had ran out of ideas and the picture of me sitting on the bench with the shadows of the glass frame comming through onto the floor and it has leading lines but the only problem is that the lines are the first thing you notice and your eyes follow them along to me on the bench but that should be the main focus.
After we took all the photos we had to develop them but first we had to get the film into the light proof tub so the film wouldn't get spoiled. I was left to do this job and it was really hard becasue you couldnt see what you where doing and im not used to that and it took me quite a while to get the hang of it. After that I developed them while emily timed how long the proccess where taking and after it was developed washed fixed and then washed again it was ready to go into the dryer.
Next week we will be enlarging the negatives and printing them to stick into our sketch books.
